Braid Hairstyles For Black Women
I don’t think that there is one single person on the face of Earth who has not heard about braided hair. Irrespectively of nationality, color skin or religion, most women wear their hair braided at least once in their lives. Although all this braided hairstyles are still unique.
The root of this hairstyle lies in the history of African-American people. The ancestors wore their hair in braids. This wasn’t just a practical solution, so their hair didn’t bother them, but the way braids were created sent a message to the other people. They could tell by the braids that a person belonged to a certain tribe. Usually the message referred to personality traits, but also could tell about important events regarding the life of the person in question. In the case of women the braids told the men whether she is or not married. Since then the braids have lost these functions, nowadays they have mostly aesthetic purposes.

This kind of hairstyle is always fashionable and besides this it is easy to maintain. Many people are convinced that only those can have braided hairstyles who have long hair. This isn’t necessarily true. Such braids can be achieved using short hair as well. Of course if one wants long hair that is easy to get: we can always use hair extensions. In most cases it is used, since most people don’t have enough hair too make the braids look good.
Those who are against such hairstyles justify their opinion by saying that these braids aren’t easy to change, which means that once you have got such a hairstyle it stays that way until you decide to get rid of it. At this point I have to contradict these people, because what they say isn’t entirely true. There are a lot of other braid hairstyles for black women you can have even if your hair is braided. Such hairstyles include ponytails (ideal to wear on a daily basis) and for more special occasions: updos, buns and French twist. Even the braids can be diversified: they don’t have to be entirely braided. Partial braids give a more romantic look.
There are many different types of braids including box braids, micro braids, invisible braids, cornrow braids and zigzag braids. Not only adults can have this hairstyle, it is often had by children as well. There are a lot of celebrities who can be seen having such a hairstyle, among them Alicia Keys. Besides we can say that braided hairstyles are very practical both in the summer (the hair won’t keep you hot) and in the winter.

Braid hairstyles for black women have already become some sort of characteristic that is typical for this ethnic group. Because braids can be done in so many different ways, this hairstyle has become a way for (mostly) black women to express themselves, because the way their braids are made tell the others around them a little something about the personality of the person in question (for example if she has a sporty style or a more elegant one).
