African American Hairstyles
The truth is that I never really understood what is the big difference between African American hairstyles and all the other hairstyles. By this time I have realized that there isn’t any big difference, the only thing that is varies is that most African American people have strong and curly hair.
One of the African American hairstyles that is gaining more and more popularity nowadays is the natural hairstyle, meaning that the hair isn’t treated in any way. It is a well-known fact that a lot of black women spend a lot of time and a lot of money to get their hair done, because they want it to be straight.
I don’t really get it why, but I think it is true that people always want what they don’t have. I think that there might be some historical reasons as well: this is the way African American people are trying to hide what they are even if it is done unconsciously. If you have natural hair you can do with it whatever you want: let it loose, tie it, twist it or braid it, there aren’t any limitations and whatever you do, you can be sure that your hair looks great.
One of the most typical hairstyles for African American people, are the braids. This isn’t something new; in fact braids have been used for a very long time by tribes living in Africa. They not only had an aesthetic and practical function as it has these days, but they used the braids to send messages to the people around them. You could tell a lot of things about a person just by looking at the braids he or she had.
For example braids could tell you whether a woman is married or not, if a man is a good hunter or warrior or simply which is the tribe that the person in question belongs to. Braids are used to day as well, but now they have different purposes. They became a way to express artistic inclinations. There are hundreds of patterns that can be created using several different techniques. Even celebrities like these hairstyles and contrary to what you might think, men wear braids also, even if their hair is shorter.
In our days there are no limitations when it comes to African American hairstyles. People can have whatever style they want, no matter if it is short, medium or long, if it is natural or not. African American women also enjoy having up-dos that are thought to be hard to achieve with curly hair, but I think that this way they up-do looks even more interesting and a lot more natural.
I think that in our times people are trying too hard to achieve perfection or at least what they think that perfection is. Don’t get me wrong, I am not against straightening the hair, but my personal opinion is that it is always more beautiful what is natural than the one achieved using chemicals or other techniques.
